Snowshoe Excursion in Repovesi National Park

Snowshoe Excursion in Repovesi National Park

A guided snowshoe excursion in Repovesi National Park offers hikers winter nature and silence. Between rocky precipices, hills and ice-covered lakes and ponds, we proceed observing the winter nature while the guide tells about the nature and history of the park. The guided route in the park's hilly terrain offers a comfortable challenge in an immersive experience.

Wintertime nature on the Repovesi National Park

The Repovesi National Park area is a rugged and wilderness area. In winter, the park is quiet, if not completely silent. The ravens, those wise birds of the wilderness, tell about the wanderers in their ravens on duty. A Great spotted woodpecker may reveal itself by knocking on the trunk of the deadwood, but sometimes a Gray-headed woodpecker or a three-toed woodpecker turns out to be the knocker. In the spring and winter, in the reflection of the last rays of the afternoon sun, you can hear the whistling of a pygmy owl in the distance, and when the forest darkens, the Boreal owl creates a nice addition to the sound world of the park with its peculiar hooting. In the last rays of light, a hiker might startle a Flying squirrel flying from one tree to another. In addition to the sound world, snowshoeers can observe tracks left by animals, such as Western Capercaillie droppings under the pine trees, the poo of the mentioned flying squirrel under the Aspens, or just snow tracks left by animals. When observing, a hiker can sit on an old tree trunk and listen and hear..... nothing..

The starting and ending point of the excusrion is the gate of Tervajäirvi on Repovesi National Park at Kivisilmäntie 720, 47910 Kouvola. The duration of the excursion can be adjusted according to the needs of the customers (basically 4 hours).

About the excursion

The snowshoe route runs between lake Tervajärvi and Lake Kapiavesi, passing through the clear-cut logging area before the establishment of the national park, descending into a dark forest, stopping in the pine forest, increasing the heat a little, raising the hill and curving along the shore of Tervajärvi for break. During the route, the guide tells e.g. about the phases of the park's establishment, the nature of the park and the history of the area, and hikers get to see and experience the topics of the guide during the trip.

The total length of the route is approx. 4 km and runs in varying terrain, mostly outside the marked National park routes. Snow thickness and weather conditions affect the difficulty of the route. The snowshoe trip is carried out responsibly, whereby the guide is responsible for making sure that when moving outside the marked routes, the trip is carried out in sufficiently thick snow to avoid wearing down the surface of the soil unnecessarily.
