Aihki hill (Aihkimäki)

Aihki hill (Aihkimäki)

Aihkimäki means hill where is very old pine trees. This hill is a wonderful, open, repovesi-type hill with several old pines. The hill is the second and actually the last higher hill of the trail through which the trail passes. The forest on top of the hill is sparse and old. The pine trees bordering the hill have big curved branches, just like in the trees which called "aihki". The forest and the place are completely different from the previous forest types of trail. From different places of the hill you can see e.g. to the north, east and partly also to the south, although the visibility is limited to the nearby forests.

Top of hill is a wonderful place to take a break. And to follow nature. In midwinter, you can often hear the sounds of ravens from the hill. And if you are on the move in the spring early in the morning or at sunset, you may be able to hear the whistling of pygmy owl (smallest owl in Europe) from the north.

The low amount of snow and the spring sun can affect the thickness of the snow on the hill. Please move on the trail and avoid areas with little snow or slopes on top of the hill.
