The area of the Repovesi National Park and partly the surrounding area is generally known as rugged and wilderness-like. There is an old sand pit along the trail and precisely at its southernmost point.
Behind the sand pit, about 150 m away, begins the Sikoniemi log cabin courtyard. In the Northern Valkeala region, there were more than 20 log cabins called "savottakämppä" for twenty years in 1950´s, of which two, the Saarijärvi and Sikoniemi cabins, were located in the area of the current national park. The road leading to Sikoniemi is one of the first in the national park area. The road to Sikoniemi was built in the early 1970s when the state and the paper company Kymi made an agreement to build a road from Hevosoja via Kivisilmä to Sikoniemi.
The sand taken from the sand pit has been used e.g. in the construction of roads in the surrounding areas. Based on older maps, there was also a rocky land area at that location. Please note that the Sikoniemi log cabin area is a private area, stay on the trail!
