Ball-topped pine tree (Pallolatvainen tuulenpesämänty)

Ball-topped pine tree (Pallolatvainen tuulenpesämänty)

The ball-shaped "wind nest" pine can be seen on the trail just before crossing the official national park trail at the northern end of the trail. Look northwest across the swamp, the pine is visible on the left side of the trail in the direction of travel. A round-topped wind nest pine is on the opposite side of the swamp on the slope of the hill.

The so-called ball-top "wind nest" is a growth disorder of the tree. In this tree, the growth disorder is at the top, but it can also be lower in the tree. The growth pattern of a growth disorder can change over time, so the top of the tree can take on a different shape, such as a broom.

In a growth disorder, the shoots of the branches are often shorter and more branched than in a normal tree.
