Swamp and "torture of the tree"

Swamp and "torture of the tree"

There are several upright dead trees in the swamp, some still standing, some on the ground and some already long on the ground. Several trees show the mark of a chainsaw saw at the trunk, but the tree is still standing. Why so?

In this swamp area, some of the trees have died standing up naturally and some have been "tortured", i.e. a groove has been cut around the trunk with a chainsaw, as a result of which the tree dies and dries up. This is on purpose to increase the yield of rotting wood in the park. Dying trees also contain a lot of different microorganisms, which e.g. the woodpeckers of the park area go searching. There are a lot of holes and hollows in the standing dead trees in the swamp. The Great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is the common, but the hikers can also see Eurasian three-towed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and the gray-headed woodpecker (Picus canus) knocking on the trunks.
